Our Streets seeks a creative and detail-oriented Communications Specialist to support storytelling, content creation, and digital engagement that amplifies our campaigns and connects with diverse audiences. This role collaborates with Our Streets’ advocacy, events, and development teams to create compelling content, manage social media, and advance the organization’s public voice and communications strategy.

Position Overview

The Communications Specialist plays a key role in developing and implementing communications strategies that promote Our Streets’ advocacy work, grassroots organizing, and fundraising initiatives. Reporting to the Communications Manager, this role focuses on digital media, content creation, and storytelling to inspire action and engagement across platforms.

Core Responsibilities
  • Content Creation & Communications Strategy
    • Write and edit blog posts, newsletters, press releases, and website content to highlight Our Streets’ campaigns, events, and impact.
    • Collaborate with staff and community partners to source and amplify authentic stories and visuals.
    • Assist in developing strategies to promote advocacy campaigns, grassroots organizing events, and fundraising efforts.
    • Create basic graphic designs using Canva and/or Adobe Suite and manage design projects with outside consultants.
    • Uphold brand guidelines to ensure consistent voice and style across all content.
  • Digital Media Management
    • Manage social media content creation, scheduling, and engagement across platforms (e.g., Instagram, Twitter/Bluesky/Threads, TikTok, Facebook, LinkedIn).
    • Foster online community discussions, respond to inquiries, and grow follower engagement.
    • Support email marketing campaigns in HubSpot, including content creation, audience targeting, and workflow automations.
    • Create web content to educate, engage, and mobilize Our Streets’ audiences to take action, volunteer, and donate.
  • Traditional Media Support
    • Assist with press relations, including writing press releases, media advisories, and talking points.
    • Monitor media opportunities, pitch stories to reporters, and manage media lists.
    • Prepare staff and partners for interviews, supporting effective messaging and media interactions.
  • Impact Measurement
    • Track and analyze communications performance using analytics tools to inform strategy and report successes.
    • Provide regular updates to the team to highlight key metrics and engagement trends.
Qualifications
  • 1-3 years of experience in communications, marketing, social media management, or a similar writing-heavy role, preferably in the nonprofit or advocacy sector.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and storytelling skills, with strong attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in social media platforms and tools (e.g., Instagram, TikTok, Twitter/Bluesky/Threads, Facebook, LinkedIn).
  • Familiarity with graphic design tools (Canva, Adobe Creative Suite) and video editing software preferred.
  • Experience with email marketing and CRMs (e.g., HubSpot) preferred.
  • Proficiency in Google Workspace; experience with website management tools (e.g., WordPress) is a plus.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with diverse coalitions, community partners, and stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to balance multiple priorities.
