SUMMARY:Imagine 6th Avenue North
DESCRIPTION:Imagine 6th Avenue North is a big\, family-friendly block party for neighborhood connection and community organization. This free event is a fantastic way to experience artists\, musicians\, and local businesses from the neighborhood and imagine a better future together. \n\n\n\nFree Food\, Live Music\, Art\, & More\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nWhen the Minnesota Highway Commission (now the Minnesota Department of Transportation or MnDOT) routed and constructed Olson Memorial Highway over historic 6th Avenue North in the late 1930s and 1940s\, it destroyed a vibrant Black and Jewish community corridor\, often called the “Beale Street of Minneapolis.” Homes\, businesses\, jazz clubs\, synagogues\, churches\, and community centers were demolished to make way for the highway. \n\n\n\nNow\, Our Streets has partnered with Harrison Neighborhood Association\, Heritage Park Neighborhood Association\, and other Northside partners to advocate for a restored 6th Avenue North. \n\n\n\nAt the Imagine 6th Avenue North event\, community members will have the opportunity to learn more about the possibility of a highway-to-boulevard conversion\, share their ideas for the future\, and imagine what their neighborhood could be like without the highway. \n\n\n\nThe event includes musical performances from Northside artists including Traiveon\, Casual Confusion\, and Se’anna. Community members will have the opportunity to contribute to a community quilt with Million Artist Movement and leave a message on the “Imagine Dream Phone” and share their ideas for the future. Attendees will be offered free food and can shop at the pop-up market with The Dream Shop featuring more than 20 Northside artists and makers. Kids will be able to get their faces painted and play in a bouncy house. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Highlight: Million Artist Movement Community Quilt-Making\n\n\n\nJoin Million Artist Movement in utilizing the power of art to collaborate as a community! Together\, we will create a quilt that imagines a better future in Near North Minneapolis—a future that prioritizes the safety and well-being of those who live here. Make a quilt square that embodies what you want to see in your neighborhood. \n\n\n\nJoin us as we joyfully organize around the future of 6th Avenue North. \n\n\n\nNeed a ride? Get your free MetroTransit bus pass. \n\n\n\nVolunteer\n\nAbout the Imagine Series\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

SUMMARY:Minneapolis City Council Climate and Infrastructure Committee Meeting: I-94 Resolution
DESCRIPTION:The Minneapolis City Council Climate and Infrastructure Committee will vote on a resolution to study the removal of the 7.5-mile stretch of Interstate 94 between downtown Minneapolis and Saint Paul. If passed\, it will go to a full council vote. \n\n\n\nRead the Resolution\n\nWatch Live\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow to Support the Resolution\n\n\n\nEmail Minneapolis City Council Climate and Infrastructure Committee members and ask them to support the resolution. \n\n\n\n\nCouncil Member Katie Cashman (Chair)\n\n\n\nCouncil Member Emily Koski (Vice-Chair)\n\n\n\nCouncil Member LaTrisha Vetaw\n\n\n\nCouncil Member Jamal Osman\n\n\n\nCouncil Member Jason Chavez\n\n\n\nCouncil Member Aurin Chowdhury\n\n\n\n\nSample Script\n\n\n\n\nDear Council Member ______\, \n\n\n\nI am reaching out to ask for your support for the Rethinking I-94 City Council resolution that will soon be considered. \n\n\n\nBuilding I-94 through our City neighborhoods was a generational mistake. Thousands of residents lost their homes\, businesses and livelihoods. In the decades that followed\, the highway has continued to divide neighborhoods and harm its neighbors with traffic noise and pollution. \n\n\n\nI support this resolution because _________________ \n\n\n\nNow that the highway is breaking down\, Rethinking I-94 is a generational opportunity to right this wrong. Our city can reimagine the highway corridor to reconnect neighborhoods\, grow the tax base\, and create new affordable housing\, small businesses and parks. This resolution would ensure that the health and well-being of Minneapolis residents\, not more lanes for suburban drivers\, is prioritized as MnDOT approaches key project decisions this winter. \n\n\n\nPlease vote yes on this important action.

SUMMARY:Street Smarts: Bike Lanes Are White Lanes
DESCRIPTION:Transportation affects so many aspects of our lives. Join us as we delve deeper into the important transportation issues so that we can be better advocates for equitable transportation! \n\n\n\nSign Up\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Book\n\n\n\nThe number of bicyclists is increasing in the United States\, especially among the working class and people of color. In contrast to the demographics of bicyclists in the United States\, advocacy for bicycling has focused mainly on the interests of white upwardly mobile bicyclists\, leading to neighborhood conflicts and accusations of racist planning. \n\n\n\nIn Bike Lanes Are White Lanes\, scholar Melody L. Hoffmann argues that the bicycle has varied cultural meaning as a “rolling signifier.” That is\, the bicycle’s meaning changes in different spaces\, with different people\, and in different cultures. The rolling signification of the bicycle contributes to building community\, influences gentrifying urban planning\, and upholds systemic race and class barriers. \n\n\n\nIn this study of three prominent U.S. cities—Milwaukee\, Portland\, and Minneapolis—Hoffmann examines how the burgeoning popularity of urban bicycling is trailed by systemic issues of racism\, classism\, and displacement. From a pro-cycling perspective\, Bike Lanes Are White Lanes highlights many problematic aspects of urban bicycling culture and its advocacy as well as positive examples of people trying earnestly to bring their community together through bicycling. \n\n\n\nDiscussion Questions\n\n\n\nThis book is almost 10 years old. What changes have we seen in the local bike advocacy landscape since this book was written? What hasn’t changed? \n\n\n\nHow does this change how we advocate for bicycle infrastructure? \n\n\n\nOur Streets used to be Minneapolis Bicycle Coalition. What surprises you about Hoffman’s references to our organizational roots? \n\n\n\nHoffman writes about the bicycle being a “rolling signifier” and how its symbolism changes based on cultural context. How has\, if at all\, the bicycle as a “rolling signifier” changed in the past decade? \n\n\n\nE-bikes and micro-mobility have increased since this book was published. How has that affected\, if at all\, the perception of bicycling and bike infrastructure? \n\n\n\nWhere to Find the Book\n\n\n\nThe eBook is available through the Twin Cities Metro eLibrary and some locations of the Hennepin County Library. You can also purchase through Bookshop.org and select your favorite local bookstore. If you’re having trouble\, we have a few copies we are happy to loan. Contact info@ourstreetsmn.org.

SUMMARY:Bring Back 6th History Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Through the Bring Back 6th History Exhibit at UROC during October 2024\, you are invited to imagine the aliveness of Old 6th Avenue in the mid-1900s and discover how anti-Black and anti-Jewish decisions and policies expedited its destruction. \n\n\n\nLook east along Olson Memorial Highway toward downtown Minneapolis. Ninety years ago this would have been 6th Avenue North\, a vibrant\, walkable commercial district with thirteen restaurants\, eleven synagogues\, grocery stores\, a laundromat\, ice cream shops\, five churches\, a streetcar line\, and a half dozen nightclubs and live music venues. \n\n\n\nOnce called the “Beale Street of Minneapolis\,” the old Near-Northside was an integrated Black and Jewish community that was destroyed for the construction of Olson Memorial Highway. What was once 6th Avenue\, a thriving community and place of commerce\, is now a trench of traffic polluting the neighborhood. \n\n\n\nThe Bring Back 6th Mobile Exhibit was developed in 2022 by Our Streets in partnership with the University of Minnesota College of Design’s Department of Heritage Studies and Public History and Harrison Neighborhood Association. \n\n\n\nView the exhibit during the month of October at the University of Minnesota’s Urban Research and Outreach-Engagement Center (UROC). The exhibit is presented courtesy of UROC. \n\n\n\nLearn how Our Streets and community partners are advocating for a new\, more community-centered version of The Avenue on the Bring Back 6th initiative page.

SUMMARY:Mapping Prejudice on 6th Ave North
DESCRIPTION:Olson Memorial Highway\, or Highway 55\, is an urban highway running through North Minneapolis. It is one of many urban highways that divides communities\, pollutes the environment\, and creates a hazardous environment for nearby residents. \n\n\n\nOlson Memorial Highway has a uniquely devastating history\, as the construction of the highway was at the expense of a thriving Black and Jewish cultural corridor along 6th Avenue North that was home to dozens of homes\, shops\, businesses\, and music venues. \n\n\n\nBring Back 6th Campaign\n\n\n\nOur Streets Advocacy Director José Antonio Zayas Cabán and Mapping Prejudice Co-Founder Kirsten Delegard present on the history of Olson Memorial Highway and how racist housing policies\, along with transportation and urban development\, demonstrate an urgency to transform the highway into a boulevard as a means to restore safety and accessibility back into the communities through which it divides.

SUMMARY:252/94 PAC Meeting (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) is meeting with the Policy Advisory Committee (PAC) for the 252/94 project. The PAC is made up of elected officials representing the impacted communities neighboring the transportation project and other decision-makers. \n\n\n\nDuring the meeting\, MnDOT shares the latest project updates. There may be time for the public to ask questions or make comments at the end of the meeting. \n\n\n\nRegister for the meeting to oppose the expansion and rebuild options for this corridor. There is local opposition\, and the project threatens to displace more than 40 homes and businesses. We know expansion doesn’t solve traffic. It’s unacceptable for MnDOT to continue with expansion options for this project. \n\n\n\nCan’t make the meeting? Email decision-makers. \n\n\n\nTake Action

SUMMARY:Brooklyn Center 252/94 Public Meeting
DESCRIPTION:MnDOT is hosting a public meeting on the 252/94 project as part of the environmental review. Join and voice your opposition to expansion. \n\n\n\nTake Action\n\n\n\nIf MnDOT moves forward with highway expansion\, approximately 210 homes and businesses may be destroyed in Brooklyn Park and Brooklyn Center\, two of the Twin Cities’ most racially diverse suburban communities\, in the largest highway-driven land acquisition in a generation. \n\n\n\nThe proposed expansion threatens to displace adjacent residents\, seize property\, and disrupt community bonds. Those who remain will suffer increased traffic–expected to be double current levels–as well as tire pollution\, and vehicle tailpipe pollution.

SUMMARY:Community Workshop with RISE
DESCRIPTION:Join Reviving Islamic Sisterhood for Empowerment (RISE) in collaboration with Our Streets\, Amanah Rec\, and Al Maa’uun to discuss the Highway Justice Act. \n\n\n\nMinnesota’s trunk highway system takes various forms\, from small-town main streets to large urban freeways\, and serves all transportation modes. These highways aren’t just for car—they’re vital corridors that connect our communities\, whether we’re driving\, walking\, biking\, or taking public transit. However\, the way we currently interpret state law means that highway funding can only be used for car-related infrastructure\, even though our Constitution never specifically required this limitation. \n\n\n\nThe proposed legislation would clarify that highway funds can be used for all types of transportation infrastructure along highway corridors. The policy also puts us on par with climate and transportation leaders like Colorado\, who passed a similar policy in 2013. \n\n\n\nLearn More

SUMMARY:Taking the Wheel: Rethinking I-94 Community Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The future of I-94 is being decided behind closed doors. Join us to collectively and publicly raise our voices for environmental\, racial\, and climate justice! \n\n\n\n\n\nMnDOT is trying to shut out the public by holding a virtual-only meeting at an inaccessible time and limiting public comment about I-94\, an issue affecting everyone in the Twin Cities. But we know the people deserve a say\, and our voices are strongest together. Join us on January 17th at the Minneapolis Central Library to observe the meeting and support each other as we give public comment. We have this once-in-a-generation opportunity to repair the harms of urban highways and invest in infrastructure like the Twin Cities Boulevard that actually works for the people and the planet. That’s what we are fighting for\, no matter how hard MnDOT tries to limit our options and maintain the status quo. \n\n\n\nIf you haven’t already\, register for public comment. \n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\nThe meeting starts at 9:30am\, with public comment scheduled at the end of the meeting.
