SUMMARY:Imagine Cedarfest
DESCRIPTION:Imagine Cedarfest is a big\, family-friendly block party for neighborhood connection and community organization. This event is a fantastic way to experience artists\, musicians\, and local businesses from the neighborhood and imagine a better future together. \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nWhen the Minnesota Highway Commission (now the Minnesota Department of Transportation or MnDOT) routed and constructed I-94 through the urban core of the Twin Cities in the ’60s\, it destroyed hundreds of homes and businesses and displaced thousands. Now\, as MnDOT evaluates options for the highway’s future\, we have the opportunity to influence one of the biggest policy decisions in decades. \n\n\n\nJoin us as we joyfully organize around the future of I-94. \n\n\n\nAbout the Imagine Series\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVolunteer at the Event\n\n\n\nVolunteer and help make Imagine a success! By volunteering at Imagine Cedarfest\, you help us create a welcoming and engaging environment for visitors\, organizations and businesses across the Twin Cities. Volunteers get free food and a t-shirt! \n\n\n\nApply\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

SUMMARY:Minneapolis City Council Climate and Infrastructure Committee Meeting: I-94 Resolution
DESCRIPTION:The Minneapolis City Council Climate and Infrastructure Committee will vote on a resolution to study the removal of the 7.5-mile stretch of Interstate 94 between downtown Minneapolis and Saint Paul. If passed\, it will go to a full council vote. \n\n\n\nRead the Resolution\n\nWatch Live\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow to Support the Resolution\n\n\n\nEmail Minneapolis City Council Climate and Infrastructure Committee members and ask them to support the resolution. \n\n\n\n\nCouncil Member Katie Cashman (Chair)\n\n\n\nCouncil Member Emily Koski (Vice-Chair)\n\n\n\nCouncil Member LaTrisha Vetaw\n\n\n\nCouncil Member Jamal Osman\n\n\n\nCouncil Member Jason Chavez\n\n\n\nCouncil Member Aurin Chowdhury\n\n\n\n\nSample Script\n\n\n\n\nDear Council Member ______\, \n\n\n\nI am reaching out to ask for your support for the Rethinking I-94 City Council resolution that will soon be considered. \n\n\n\nBuilding I-94 through our City neighborhoods was a generational mistake. Thousands of residents lost their homes\, businesses and livelihoods. In the decades that followed\, the highway has continued to divide neighborhoods and harm its neighbors with traffic noise and pollution. \n\n\n\nI support this resolution because _________________ \n\n\n\nNow that the highway is breaking down\, Rethinking I-94 is a generational opportunity to right this wrong. Our city can reimagine the highway corridor to reconnect neighborhoods\, grow the tax base\, and create new affordable housing\, small businesses and parks. This resolution would ensure that the health and well-being of Minneapolis residents\, not more lanes for suburban drivers\, is prioritized as MnDOT approaches key project decisions this winter. \n\n\n\nPlease vote yes on this important action.

SUMMARY:Street Smarts: Bike Lanes Are White Lanes
DESCRIPTION:Transportation affects so many aspects of our lives. Join us as we delve deeper into the important transportation issues so that we can be better advocates for equitable transportation! \n\n\n\nSign Up\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Book\n\n\n\nThe number of bicyclists is increasing in the United States\, especially among the working class and people of color. In contrast to the demographics of bicyclists in the United States\, advocacy for bicycling has focused mainly on the interests of white upwardly mobile bicyclists\, leading to neighborhood conflicts and accusations of racist planning. \n\n\n\nIn Bike Lanes Are White Lanes\, scholar Melody L. Hoffmann argues that the bicycle has varied cultural meaning as a “rolling signifier.” That is\, the bicycle’s meaning changes in different spaces\, with different people\, and in different cultures. The rolling signification of the bicycle contributes to building community\, influences gentrifying urban planning\, and upholds systemic race and class barriers. \n\n\n\nIn this study of three prominent U.S. cities—Milwaukee\, Portland\, and Minneapolis—Hoffmann examines how the burgeoning popularity of urban bicycling is trailed by systemic issues of racism\, classism\, and displacement. From a pro-cycling perspective\, Bike Lanes Are White Lanes highlights many problematic aspects of urban bicycling culture and its advocacy as well as positive examples of people trying earnestly to bring their community together through bicycling. \n\n\n\nDiscussion Questions\n\n\n\nThis book is almost 10 years old. What changes have we seen in the local bike advocacy landscape since this book was written? What hasn’t changed? \n\n\n\nHow does this change how we advocate for bicycle infrastructure? \n\n\n\nOur Streets used to be Minneapolis Bicycle Coalition. What surprises you about Hoffman’s references to our organizational roots? \n\n\n\nHoffman writes about the bicycle being a “rolling signifier” and how its symbolism changes based on cultural context. How has\, if at all\, the bicycle as a “rolling signifier” changed in the past decade? \n\n\n\nE-bikes and micro-mobility have increased since this book was published. How has that affected\, if at all\, the perception of bicycling and bike infrastructure? \n\n\n\nWhere to Find the Book\n\n\n\nThe eBook is available through the Twin Cities Metro eLibrary and some locations of the Hennepin County Library. You can also purchase through Bookshop.org and select your favorite local bookstore. If you’re having trouble\, we have a few copies we are happy to loan. Contact info@ourstreetsmn.org.
