The Bring Back 6th Coalition met with Representatives Esther Agbaje (59B), Fue Lee (59A), Michael Howard (51A, Housing Finance and Policy Committee Co-Chair), Brad Tabke (54A, Transportation Finance and Policy Committee Co-Chair), and Senator Scott Dibble (61, Transportation Committee Chair) yesterday. Despite a scheduled meeting with Senator Bobby Joe Champion (59), he was unable to meet.
Four representatives from coalition member organizations were able to personally share their stories as residents and advocates: Aaron Raivo-Lynch of Phyllis Wheatley Community Center, Maggie Brown of Urban Strategies Inc., Nichole Buehler and Marcus Kar of Harrison Neighborhood Association. Many attendees have been working on this project for numerous years. This was an opportunity to share updates on the project as they relate to the Minnesota Department of Transportation’s own process for redesigning the Olson Memorial Highway corridor.
Last fall, the coalition published an in-depth report outlining three engineered design concepts to consider for the future of Olson Memorial Highway. The concepts emerged from a community-led process in collaboration with Toole Design Group. Members reviewed sections of the report with legislators, highlighting the need for safety improvements, anti-displacement policy recommendations, green space, and mixed-use development.
