While you may have sent emails and left voicemails, it is likely you’ve never met with the state elected officials who represent you. Meeting with them to talk about the issues you care about is an extremely effective advocacy tool. Don’t be daunted by the Capitol building—these folks work for you! Follow these steps to schedule a meeting with your legislators.
First, find out who your representatives are.
Look up your Minnesota representatives here. For Minnesota legislative issues, focus on your Minnesota House Representative and Minnesota State Senator, not your U.S. elected officials.
Start with an email.
Email your representatives and CC any additional staff listed on their pages (e.g., policy aides, committee assistants). If no email is listed, use their contact form.
Your email should contain:
- A greeting: Include their esteemed title.
- My name is [NAME], and I live at [YOUR ADDRESS]. This is important! You want to identify yourself as their constituent.
- Your reason for writing: identify the issue, make it personal if you have a story.
e.g., I almost got hit by a car on my bike. I’d like to not get hit by a car while biking. - Make your demand: I’d like to set up a meeting to discuss this issue with you.
- Sign off: Thanks, Cheers, Regards, In Solidarity, with Love and Light…whatever fits your vibe.
Extra Credit: Follow up with a phone call.
Follow up as needed.
Schedule and attend the meeting.
Don’t be a flake! Once you get a meeting on the calendar, attend the meeting (preferably by bike, public transit, walking, or rolling). Or, you can meet virtually! You can always bring like-minded friends and neighbors, too.
Don’t be nervous. Share your story and make your ask.
