Support a car-free K-mart site.
The City of Minneapolis plans to reconnect Nicollet Avenue S between Lake Street and the Midtown Greenway, also known as the K-mart site. This project is a generational opportunity to create a vibrant car-free street with abundant space for walking, biking, rolling and public transit.

There is overwhelming support for the car-free design option.
However, the City of Minneapolis is moving forward with plans to return car-traffic to the K-mart site. Take action by emailing City decision-makers today.
This project will shape the future of Eat Street.
Car-free streets are good for business.
Research has demonstrated that car-free streets create environments where people want to congregate and spend money. A car-free K-mart site would add to the vibrancy of Whittier.

Nicollet Avenue South is a high-injury street.
The City of Minneapolis’ Vision Zero program has identified Nicollet Avenue S as a street where people walking, biking and driving are most likely to experience a severe crash. Adding more car traffic will worsen these safety issues.

Nicollet Avenue near the K-mart site hasn’t had car traffic for decades.
The segment of Nicollet Avenue north of the K-mart site, known as Eat Street, is breaking down and will be redesigned in the coming years. A car-free K-mart site will make it possible to reimagine Eat Street for people.

The little space we haven’t already given up to cars, we need to keep.
66%
of severe and fatal crashes happen on just 9% of streets in Minneapolis. Several of these streets are in the New Nicollet Ave project area.
#1
The car-free option ranked #1 in the City of Minneapolis community survey of over 2,500 participants.
95%
of the day, the average car sits parked. This takes up valuable space in urban areas that could be used for people.
