For so long, highway projects like I-94 and Highway 252 have divided neighborhoods, displaced families, increased pollution impacts, and prioritized vehicle speed over community well-being. Across the Twin Cities, residents continue to speak out and organize against this legacy of harm. Communities are demanding something different than the continuation of the status quo.
Hennepin County’s latest redesign includes important improvements, including a separated bikeway and additional green space. But it still falls short of delivering the people-first corridor Lyndale deserves. As construction approaches, we are asking decision makers to publicly commit to two common-sense priorities.
MnDOT should immediately pause the Rethinking I-94 project to protect Minnesota’s autonomy in deciding the future of our state’s most significant transportation mega-project and avoid locking our communities into a federal framework that contradicts our state values.
