celebrating the joy of car-free street closures

The Open Streets Minneapolis™ that you know and love is back this year.
Open Streets Minneapolis is back! Join us in a celebration of community, where we close major thoroughfares to car traffic, allowing people to walk, bike, roll, and connect with their neighbors and local businesses. Together, we’ll experience streets as places to explore, play, and dream.
We build places for people.
Open Streets Minneapolis is part of a global movement to make streets places that put people first. These free, family-friendly events help us experience streets as public spaces where communities thrive. Congested city streets become vibrant, pedestrian-friendly boulevards where people can move. Open Streets Minneapolis events aim to fundamentally change how people think about their city streets. At each event, local businesses, artists, and community groups transform their streets with public art, dance performances, pop-up shops, games, activities, and more, showcasing the diversity, creativity, and culture of Minneapolis.

Open Streets Minneapolis™ has been bringing joy to Minnesota neighborhoods since 2011.
In 2011, Our Streets (then the Minneapolis Bicycle Coalition) launched and hosted the first Open Streets Minneapolis on two miles of Lyndale Avenue South. An estimated 5,000 people attended the event, which reimagined Lyndale Avenue as a space for biking, walking, community building, and play.
Since then, Open Streets has become a beloved cornerstone of the Minneapolis community. More than 575,000 people have attended these events, with as many as 50,000 people attending the largest single events. At Open Streets Minneapolis, you can expect more than 300 unique participants to fill the streets: neighborhood organizations, small businesses, local entrepreneurs, artists, musicians, campaigns, and nonprofits. Open Street Minneapolis events are powered by volunteers. More than 100 folks come out each year to make these events possible.
Open Streets Minneapolis is a cherished community tradition where neighbors meet neighbors, learn about their community, and experience a car-free environment. It is a hallmark of warmer weather that doesn’t require you to spend a penny to enjoy.
